چکیده

Background Patients with aortic dilation often present an eccentric transvalvular flow jet. The angle of the flow jet from the aorta centerline, or the flow jet angle (FJA), has been reported as a risk factor in bicuspid aortic valve patients [1]. In recent studies we introduced a the jet shear layer detection (JSLD) method for the automated characterization of transvalvular flow structure across the aortic valve [2,3]. The objective of this study was to evaluate FJA in patients with aortic dilation using the 3D JSLD structure obtained from 4D flow MRI.

4D flow jet shear layer detection method for the measurement of effective orifice area and assessment of aortic stenosis severity

Background Aortic stenosis (AS) is the most common cause of valve replacement and its severity is mainly assessed by transthoracic Doppler echocardiography (TTE) to quantify valve effective orifice area (EOA) as determined by the continuity equation. In a previous study we demonstrated that EOA can be directly determined with 2D flow MRI downstream of the AS using the jet shear layer detection ...

Aortopathy in patients with bicuspid aortic valve stenosis: role of aortic root functional parameters.

OBJECTIVES We prospectively examined functional characteristics of the aortic root and transvalvular haemodynamic flow in order to define factors associated with the severity of aortopathy in patients undergoing surgery for bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) stenosis. METHODS A total of 103 consecutive patients with BAV stenosis (mean age 61 ± 9 years, 66% male) underwent aortic valve replacement ± ...

Correlation between systolic transvalvular flow and proximal aortic wall changes in bicuspid aortic valve stenosis.

OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to analyse the correlation between preoperative systolic transvalvular flow patterns and proximal aortic wall lesions in patients undergoing surgery for bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) stenosis. METHODS A total of 48 consecutive patients with BAV stenosis (mean age 58 ± 9 years, 65% male) underwent aortic valve replacement (AVR) ± proximal aortic surgery f...

Determination of Aerated Steps Number over Broad-Crest Stepped Spillways under Jet Flow Regime by using Artificial Neural Network

Recently, particular attention has been paid to the stepped spillways due to the increasing effect of energy dissipation and the reduction of cavitations risks with the development of Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) technique. Flow regimes on the spillways divide into three groups, namely skimming, jet and transition flow. Compared to the numerical methods, the majority of performed studies in ...

Morphotype-Dependent Flow Characteristics in Bicuspid Aortic Valve Ascending Aortas: A Benchtop Particle Image Velocimetry Study

The bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) is a major risk factor for secondary aortopathy such as aortic dilation. The heterogeneous BAV morphotypes [left-right-coronary cusp fusion (LR), right-non-coronary cusp fusion (RN), and left-non-coronary cusp fusion (LN)] are associated with different dilation patterns, suggesting a role for hemodynamics in BAV aortopathogenesis. However, assessment of this theo...
